He was introduced to baseball at an early age by his father, who played baseball in the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez was a standout in high school, when he attended school in Palmetto Bay, Florida. He was regarded as the top prospect in the country by 1993, and he even became the first high school player to try out for the United States national baseball team.
