After opening a rolling highway between Madrid and Valencia and eyeing one between Algeciras and Zaragoza, Spain now has its sights set on a rolling highway between Madrid and Vitoria, Basque country. The project is supposed to be completed by 2026.
Reportedly, a new rolling highway between Madrid, Valladolid, Burgos and Vitoria is the one that has gathered the most interest from the business community, and the Spanish transport ministry is now aiming to put it into practice by 2026. It is mostly the automotive and agricultural industries that stand to gain from such an initiative, according to Spanish media.
The rolling highway would be linked up with the already existing Madrid – Valencia rolling highway, allowing for direct access to maritime transportation via the latter city’s port. For the automotive industry, for example, it would mean easier access to the necessary component parts coming in from Türkiye. In the opposite direction, exports through the port would also become easier. When loaded onto trains in the city of Valladolid, truck journeys to the port would be reduced by approximately 200 kilometres.
Madrid – Valencia extension
Earlier, Spanish logistics and transport companies already expressed interest in extending the Madrid – Valencia rolling highway to Valladolid. The idea of extending the service was tightly linked to the construction of a new rail freight terminal in Valladolid, which should be operational by 2026.
Other than extending the rolling highway to Valladolid, transport minister Puente pointed out that companies are also interested in establishing a new Madrid – Valladolid route that would connect to Algeciras, in the south, and Zaragoza, in the northeast. Spain put out a 64,7 million euro tender to make that project a reality.
