While the Ford Motor Company is best known for its automobiles, it operated an aviation subsidiary known as the Stout Metal Airplane Division during the interwar period. The company produced the famous Ford Trimotor, a three-engined transport aircraft. Designed in the early 1920s, the aircraft performed its first flight in June 1926 and entered service the same year.
