‘Nonsense’: AFL great Sam Newman blasts Acknowledgement of Country

Australian Football League (AFL) great and host of ‘You Cannot Be Serious’ Sam Newman has found himself at the centre of a heated debate after heading towards the exit during an Acknowledgement of Country at an Australia Day event in Victoria.

Mr Newman joined Sky News hosts Danica De Giorgio and James Macpherson to discuss why he started to leave as the Victorian Governor began an Acknowledgment of Country during an event.

According to Mr Newman, his decision to head for the exit was not a sign of disrespect, but rather a demonstration of his conviction that the Acknowledgement of Country is “nonsense.”

“I don’t want to stay in any function or any chat that’s going on when they welcome the country,” Mr Newman said.

“I think it’s wrong and it’s nonsense and it’s complete, it’s a sham. So I started to walk out of respect. Let’s not be a hypocrite if you don’t like it, move out.”

  1. Anyone noticed the AFL has cut back on the welcome to country rubbish before the games I have not seen many games this year (trying to think of one) where there has been a welcome to country. Maybe the first round only.
