Following Jamaica's independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, the Jamaican government looked to boost the country's economy and saw tourism as vital to the country's future. While BWIA West Indies Airways already had a significant presence in the Caribbean region, its main base was not in Jamaica but rather in Trinidad. With this in mind, a national flag carrier was needed for Jamaican aviation to grow.
