More protesters charged after Hunter coal rail interference

A second person, this time a Sydneysider, will face court following an unauthorised protest in the Hunter overnight.

About 3.15am on Thursday 27 June, emergency services were called to a rail corridor near the Iron Bark Creek Bridge, Hexham.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District – assisted by Police Rescue – attended the site and started inquiries into the incident.

A 21-year-old Sydney man was arrested at the scene and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

There, he was charged with enter enclosed non-agricultural lands serious safety risk, and cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Friday 28 June.

It followed the arrest of a woman earlier in the evening.

About 8pm, emergency services were also tasked to the Pacific Highway, Tarro.

A 73-year-old South Australian resident was escorted to Raymond Terrace Police Station where she was charged with enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse, enter enclosed non-agricultural lands serious safety risk, and cause obstruction to railway locomotive or rolling stock.
