Further strike action undertaken by airport staff in Germany has driven a notable number of canceled flights.
Primarily impacting Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC), a total of 1,043 flights were canceled between February 7-8 2024. We used our data to look at the airlines affected and the total number of cancellations at 4 German airports. This follows our review of the impact of last week’s strikes in Germany.
Which airlines were most affected?
Our data reveals that, in addition to Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC), Hamburg (HAM) and Bremen (BRE) also saw notable cancellations caused by strikes between February 07-08.
Most impacted was Frankfurt, where a total of 593 flights were canceled, representing 28% of departures and 29% of arrivals. Munich saw 33% of departures and arrivals canceled, and Bremen 25% and 23% respectively.
Cancellations at Frankfurt and Munich alone represented 16% of cancellations in Germany as a whole.
Which airlines were most affected?
Cancellations at these airports directly impacted 1043 flights operated by 20 airlines. The most affected airlines by number of canceled flights were Lufthansa (LH), Air Dolomiti (EN), Condor (DE) and British Airways (BA).
German airlines saw the most impact. Lufthansa canceled a total of 896 flights between February 7-8, effectively 43% of the airline’s schedule. The majority of these flights were destined for European destinations.
A small number of longer distance flights operated by carriers including United and Air Canada were also cancelled.
