Designed in the mid-to-late 1950s to replace the large, heavy-lift piston-powered Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave, the Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a gas turbine-powered twin-rotor helicopter capable of carrying between 33 and 55 troops. Named after the Native American people of Oregon and Washington state, it entered service with the United States Army in 1962 and has been used in multiple military actions around the globe.
