Talk of a return of the Wellington to Auckland night train has been given an injection of hope thanks to the rising cost of domestic air fares.
The idea was floated at a regional council meeting late last week by councillor Ken Laban, who on Sunday said he would personally use an overnight sleeper train if it was available instead of the weekly flights he took for his other job as a sports commentator.
The last Wellington to Auckland Northerner overnight sleeper train stopped running after 96 years in service in 2004 with cheap airfares blamed.
