Construction of the new Cave Hill Road pedestrian underpass is gathering pace, with the bulk of the structural works now almost complete.
Work to build the underpass follows the closure of the dangerous Cave Hill Road level crossing earlier this year, with the underpass providing a safer connection to Lilydale High School and nearby homes and businesses.
The fully-accessible 5m wide underpass can be accessed by stairs and a ramp, and will feature extensive lighting and brightly-coloured geometric designs on the concrete facade of each entry.
Crews excavated under the rail line during a 6-week winter construction blitz and are continuing finishing works to complete ramps and stairs, and to install lighting.
Landscaping works and construction of the new turning circle outside Lilydale High School will also start next month, with the underpass expected to open in mid October.
In the meantime, pedestrians can cross the rail line at John Street to access Lilydale High School and Hutchinson Street or Melba Avenue.
The Lilydale Line is Melbourne’s second busiest rail line and the first to be level crossing free, a year ahead of schedule.
