Is a political U-turn on the cards for the Suburban Rail Loop?

Concerns have reached political fever pitch over the $34.5bn political albatross strangling the Allan government. Forging ahead with the project may no longer be an option.

This is the poor rhetoric also being made by Melbourne Radio Station 3AW. Why does 3AW and especially Tom Elliott have it in for the Suburban Rail Loop a project when completed will be a game changer for the state?

The state will be much better off with a completed Suburban Rail Loop than without. Let’s remember a recent poll showed widespread support for the Suburban Rail Loop so where are the detractors coming from?

Sadly when you look to the north and NSW they do not suffer from this shocking rhetoric of projects, they are not divided at the political level and both their opposition party and the government party at the time both supported the Sydney Metro System build.

Here in Victoria we are decades behind where we need to be and the fact is evident in dodgy road deals, the CFMEU and of course the North East Link a disgraceful project that will only cost money and time for commuters not fix any problems, it will create them. Creating problems in Melbourne for a small investment of $30b+.

Maybe it is just the Victorian’s do not get it. There are people who get it, who don’t get it and people who will never get it and Victorian’s are in the later.

Conversely perhaps they do get it sometimes all too well and object not to the project but the poor implementation of projects time and time and time again.

The Melbourne Airport Rail Link, from Sunshine to Melbourne Airport, is planned to be approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) long. This section is part of a broader project connecting the airport to Melbourne’s central business district (CBD).

How does the Melbourne Airport Rail Link a project building 12 kms of track mostly in an existing rail corridor cost $12b between Sunshine and the airport? Correct me please but that equates to a cost of $1b per route kilometre. Yes you heard it correctly $1b per route kilometre and that is mostly on an existing rail easement.

How does delaying the Melbourne Airport Rail Line because you do not have the money and the budget is broken cost an additional $2b as a holding cost? You are kidding right?

Something is very very wrong in Victoria and it is not just the government it is poor media coverage of projects that actually address productivity and make sense to complete. Borrowing money for infrastructure is never a bad idea. Borrowing money to bail out businesses and an economy damaged by an overly dictatorial government intent on extra long lockdowns is not.

  1. This cannot be real no rail line in the world could cost $1b per kilometre of construction. The tunnels under the alps in Europe do not cost this per kilometre. Who is managing the quotations for these projects and how much money is the CFMEU getting from this amount?

  2. This is shameful and disgusting. There is no way it should cost another $2b and the build is not worth $12b. Someone is taking the p*ss on this one. A full investigation is required.

  3. Mmmmmmmm I wonder if someone racking the $$$$ to keep this SRL going….despite professional in the fields of the Industry not to go ahead, no business case still plowing ahead!!!

I ask was that Belt and Road actually torn up or not? Seems like it was never torn up in the first place! pollies can say alot of words, but the actions differ it seems!

Most our leaders aren’t smart but sly and shifty, most career unionist and politician!!!

lining their own pockets it seems!
