Train testing in the Metro Tunnel continues to disrupt nearby medical equipment, creating challenges for the Victorian government.
A leaked government document obtained by Nine newspaper The Age in June revealed that MRI machines at Parkville’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre failed to meet required standards multiple times when trains were running on the subway line below the hospital.
The issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) has resulted in $128 million in capital works across Peter MacCallum, Royal Women’s, and Royal Melbourne hospitals.
Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said she was aware of the issues affecting MRI machines.
“We have been working for a number of years in mitigating the impacts EMI and I am really pleased with the way that has progressed with a whole range of mitigation strategies in place and working,” she told reporters today.
“Obviously train testing started last year and that’s when we really saw whether or not those strategies were working.
