Republic of Liberia
The President of the Republic of Liberia has nominated additional officials to positions in government. Mr. Rudolph Gbee Natt, has been appointed as the Deputy Minister for Roads and Rail, Ministry of Transport (MOT).
Zimbabwe Railway Plans
In the notes following the 8 February parliamentary sitting, an update on the plans relating to the revitalisation of the National Railways of Zimbabwe was provided.
Plans are progressing to connect Lion’s Den to Kafue in Zambia. The proposal is with the Ministry of Transport, and a meeting has been held between investors and NRZ. The investors are set to undertake a new feasibility study for this connection, even though a previous study funded by the European Union had been completed.
The potential new investors want to check the feasibility of taking the railway line through Chirundu. It is envisioned that the line will be rehabilitated from Lion’s Den, all the way through Harare to Forbes Border Post to link up with Machipanda so that all the freight coming in from Zambia and DRC can be moved. Hopefully, progress will be announced soon.
An update on the Hwange-Chikwalakwala corridor, which goes all the way to Maputo, was also provided, in line with the intended work on the line from Lion’s Den to Kafue as well as Forbes Border Post.
Due to the steel plant coming on board at Manhize, where millions of tonnes of coking coal, limestone and the finished product need to be transported from Hwange to Manhize and Manhize to Beira, there is urgency to get the NRZ up and running again. According to the notes, Dinson is a potential partner, among others who might come on board to fund the construction.
The Africa Integrated Railway Network Project
The African Integrated High Speed Railway Network (AIHSRN) initiative stands as a pivotal project under the auspices of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Its primary goal is to support the AU’s vision of fostering both physical and economic integration across the continent. Aligning with the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), the AIHSRN embodies the programme’s core principles: vision, magnitude, geographic scope, and timeframe. Furthermore, it serves as a critical facilitator for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
