Swanage T3 back after 78 years to take top honour
The Swanage Railway-based team which restored former National Collection LSWR T3 4-4-0 No. 563 has taken a top accolade at the Heritage Railway Association Annual Awards 2024. The prestigious Chairman’s Special Award, which is not handed out every year, went to the 563 Locomotive Group for the stunning results achieved in bringing a locomotive that had not steamed in more than 75 years back to life, with the help of the Flour Mill workshop. For a full round-up of the HRA 2024 awards evening, see issue 316 of Heritage Railway.
Brighton tramway named Railway of the Year
The Volks Electric Railway has carried off the covered title of Railway of the Year at the Heritage Railway Association Annual Awards 2024. Judges were impressed by the authenticity, attention to detail and dedication to the unique history of Brighton’s seafront line, the world’s oldest-working electric railway, which was built in 1883. It is the first time that a railway with no steam traction at all in its history has won the top award.

Back after 38 years: Nene Valley Danish delight!
A classic Danish locomotive which had not steamed for 38 years has made its comeback into traffic on the Nene Valley Railway.
