The National Transport Commission (NTC) has appointed Stephen Lemon in a new role as Executive Adviser, Rail Technologies, to help advance the delivery of its National Rail Action Plan (NRAP).
Through NRAP the NTC is working with industry, regulators and governments to improve the interoperability of Australia’s rail systems and support a bigger role for rail to meet growing freight and passenger needs.
Stephen brings 35 years of experience in rail system strategy and development across Australia and the UK to this new position. This includes global and local experience introducing new rail system technologies on to complex rail systems.
In his recent roles Lemon has been an important player in national conversations about the importance of interoperability and harmonisation in the Australian rail industry.
He has worked in the public and private sectors, leading Transport for NSW’s development of in-cab signalling and traffic management for Sydney Trains and as technical advisor to Brisbane’s introduction of digital technology on Cross River Rail.
“Rail interoperability and the harmonisation of Australia’s rail networks is an incredibly important topic that I am personally very passionate about,” Lemon said.
“It is recognised by National Cabinet and Australia’s transport ministers as a once in a generation opportunity to deliver efficiencies and drive safety improvements.”
The $155 billion pipeline of rail investments across Australia by governments over the next 15 years presents an opportunity to address longstanding legacy issues.
By reducing differences between the 18 networks which make up the country’s rail system, NRAP is finding solutions for rail skills shortages and operational inefficiencies, while supporting more jobs, local manufacturing, and modernisation of rail technology.
