Work begins to restore tram services in Domain Road and Park Street

Just prior to the commencement of works on building the Anzac Railway Station (that has taken far longer than necessary) changes were made to the tram network in the area. The tracks on St Kilda Road were slewed to provide access to the site on the corner of Domain and St Kilda Roads.

A further change was made being the routing of Toorak Road trams, Route 58, from Domain Road and Park Street to new track on Toorak Road connecting with the existing track at Park Street. This cost must have been huge and removed trams from Park Street and Domain Road for years despite complaints from the public.

Despite the changes the tracks in Park Street and Domain Road together with the tram overhead wiring remained in place for reactivation.

Construction snapshot for September 2024

Construction works within the Domain precinct during September will include:

  • Reinstatement works on Domain Road and construction of a new tram and bus stop
  • Edmund Herring Oval reinstatement works
  • Station entrance construction
  • Asphalting, median works and construction of footpaths
  • Finishing paving and landscaping around the South African Soldiers’ Memorial.

This photo from HAM on twitter shows works being conducted on a new tram stop platform in Domain Road. Good news for residents and those wanting better access to the Botanical Gardens.

Also clear in the photo the new stop will prevent vehicle access in Domain Road.

  1. Would be good to see the trams run again via Park Street, there is little value in the revised route. Park Street and Domain Road gives access to the gardens and the residents in the area not able to access the current arrangement.
