Queensland Rail’s regional rail network is on track to receive major maintenance upgrades during a temporary closure of the North Coast and West Moreton rail lines with impacts from 12 until 30 September.

Queensland Rail Head of Regional Scott Cornish said the track closures would allow crews safe and uninterrupted access to the rail corridor to undertake essential works ranging from track reconditioning to rail bridge upgrades.

“The North Coast Line, which runs from Brisbane to Cairns, and the West Moreton System, which runs from Rosewood to Miles, are vital sections of our regional passenger and freight network,” Cornish said.

“Crews will be undertaking major upgrades across both lines including replacing old track and sleepers, upgrading rail bridges, maintaining signals and preparing the track for the summer season through rail welding to reduce track buckling.

“To ensure the safety of all workers and provide them with undisrupted and continuous access to the rail corridor, the lines are required to be closed to rail traffic while works are underway until the end of the month.

“We care about the communities that we serve and our freight partners. That’s why through consultation with freight partners, we’ve aligned rail works with major maintenance closures across the Aurizon rail network and Cross River Rail sites, to deliver the most efficient outcome while minimising impacts to supply chains and customers.”

Cornish thanked long-distance travel train customers, freight partners and communities along the lines for their patience to allow this work to be completed safely and efficiently in the rail corridor.

“From 12 September, Queensland Rail long-distance travel services will be replaced with road coaches or have altered operations during the planned closure and customers will be informed directly of these impacts.”
