An investigation is underway after a cattle truck collided with the Ghan passenger train about 60 kilometres north of Alice Springs on Sunday morning.
The truck collided with the train’s second locomotive at the Arltunga Crossing at about 10am as the train was travelling south, according to initial reports from police.
The driver of the truck was treated by paramedics for shock and was taken to hospital, NT Police said. There have been no injuries reported by passengers on board.
Journey Beyond, the company operating the Ghan, said no serious injuries had been identified by passengers, train drivers or crew.
Emergency services were attending the scene on Sunday afternoon, the company said.
The crash caused “significant damage to both the train and the truck”, police said, and all rail services in the area were suspended.
“It is expected that disruptions to the rail network will continue for several days due to the train being unable to be moved,” police said.
“NT WorkSafe has been notified of the incident, and the Rail Network Controller has also been informed.
“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is ongoing.”
Passengers would be transported by bus to Alice Springs, a social media post from the NT government said.
