Yarra Trams operator Keolis Downer has announced it is the first and only public transport operator in Australia to be accredited as a disability confident recruiter.
This status, given by the Australian Disability Network, means that Yarra Trams’ processes, policies, and systems are equipped to attract, hire and retain people with disabilities and accessibility requirements.
Yarra Trams CEO Carla Purcell said the organisation is delighted to have received this accreditation from the Australian Disability Network, as an important step in offering genuine inclusion of people with disability in our workplace.
“We’re determined to attract and build a workforce that represents the great city we serve every day, and a major part of that is examining the entire employment cycle, starting from our recruitment processes,” she said.
“This accreditation ensures people who traditionally may not have considered a role in public transport feel welcomed and supported throughout their career at Yarra Trams, starting from the moment they visit our website or read a job description.”
The process for accreditation was extensive and examined every step in the recruitment cycle. This work ranged from ensuring that job descriptions are non-discriminatory, to fine-tuning workplace adjustment processes put in place to support people with disabilities, to modifications to the Yarra Trams website to improve accessibility.
Yarra Trams Accessibility Team has worked with many functions across the business to ensure people are enabled to reach their full potential at work. This work included identifying alternative equipment suppliers to fit unique needs, to working with colleagues to identify ways that jobs could be modified to allow applicants with disabilities to grow and thrive at Yarra Trams.
Other organisations across Australia that have received this accreditation include Australia Post, Coles, RMIT, Telstra, Victoria Police, Westpac, and Zoos Victoria.
