What ‘shocked’ Tom Elliott at the AFLW on the weekend with his daughter

Tom Elliott attended his first AFLW game for a while on Saturday night, watching Carlton play Brisbane at IKON Park with his daughter, but was left “shocked” at the lack of spectators at the ground.

The good grounds to watch the games are Western Oval (Footscray), Carlton, Windy Hill in Melbourne and maybe a few in regional towns. Carlton and Footscray have lights for night play. Arden Street playing surface looked quite good and is a good ground to get to.

Of the seven games played in Victoria during week six, all of them attracted a crowd of less than 2,500 people.

The season should begin after the AFL Mens that is right but too many changes to the calendar. What about sending some of these games to the regional centres around Victoria? Albury/Wodonga, Bendigo/Ballarat?

“Something has gone wrong at the AFLW,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

  1. AFLW games are at odd times on odd days. Make them more regular around the weekends and it will work better. Continue to start the season at the end of the AFL men’s and people will return.
