Modern aircraft are designed to cope with interference from portable electronic devices (like mobile phones) – so over time the reasons for requiring cell phones to be on airplane mode have grown more cautionary in nature. It was determined in 2014 that cell phones could interfere with an aircraft’s systems, although things may have changed since. Even so (and even after the EU lifted restrictions in 2023), there are some reasons why passengers should still put their phones on airplane mode.
