Owies to be traded as soon as today, with his days as a bluebagger over

Matt Owies’ days at Carlton are done, according to Sam Edmund.

The out-of-contract small forward was told to explore his options as the Blues struggle with list spots and salary cap.

Edmund believes the 27-year-old former Category B Rookie could be traded as soon as today.

“It’s definitely one of the more intriguing stories for me of this year. He doesn’t have a contract offer at Carlton for 2025 and he’s kicked 33 goals this season and 60 across the last two seasons,” Edmund told AFL Trade Radio.

“He won’t be going back there (to Carlton), he’s done at Carlton, that door is shut.

“He’ll be going somewhere is my mail and in this trade period. He’s got a couple of options and he needs to make a call and that call could come today.

“It’s been reported that he’s met with Gold Coast and West Coast, but he will be traded as soon as today. Won’t be going back to Carlton. That ship has sailed.

“His days at Carlton are over and it’s happened very quickly. It’s in many ways hard to believe. It’s not a money issue. They think their small forward future is tied into the likes of Jesse Motlop, Corey Durdin, Ashton Moir they want to get games into.

“List spots are super tight as well as finances. He was just out of contract at the wrong time. If he was contracted, they wouldn’t be shopping him.”

Kane Cornes believes the Blues could live to regret letting one of their leading goal kickers walk out the door.

“I think he’ll be an excellent addition to another team. West Coast could do with anybody with experience and hardness,” Cornes said.

“I really like the way he goes about it. He’s a really important team member and often puts himself out there when others aren’t prepared to.

“I think Carlton will miss him. I really do. I think he’s an important piece to what they do. It’s hard to just pick up 33 goals off the street.”
