By late-2025, trains will offer the same easy ways to pay as buses and trams in Adelaide.
Smart validators are being installed on trains across the network. For now, these smart validators will only accept metroCARD and Seniors Card. However, if passengers buy a Tap and Pay or Buy & Go ticket on a bus or tram, you can still transfer to a train departing from the Adelaide Railway Station.
The installation of smart validators on trains is part of a broader ticketing upgrade that is already offering a range of easy ways to pay on buses and trams. These options include metroCARD, Tap and Pay, and the Buy & Go app.
As part of the upgrade, Adelaide Metro are replacing the barrier gates at the Adelaide Railway Station with new gates that will accept the suite of easy ways to pay. We will provide more details soon.
When the upgrade is completed in late-2025, easy ways to pay will be available across the whole Adelaide Metro network (including trains) – and the state will say a final Goodbye Paper MetroTickets.
For now, paper MetroTickets are still in limited use. One older-style validator will remain by each set of train doors to enable customers to validate their paper MetroTickets on board.
Seniors Card members can continue to access free public transport on any validator on any bus, train or tram.
