Following the success of the first twin-engine, twin-aisle commercial aircraft, the A300, Airbus sought to make a statement in the single-aisle business. However, with competition like Boeings 737 and McDonnell Douglass DC-9, the company needed a phenomenal product to steal the market share. These efforts culminated in the first airplane of the best-selling single-aisle aircraft family, the Airbus A320.
