Extended track closures in Queensland throughout September allowed a massive scope of work to be completed on the transformational Cross River Rail project, with hundreds of workers busy in both the northern and southern parts of the rail network.
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said crews accomplished an incredible amount of work, which would not have been possible to complete safely or efficiently with trains on the tracks.
“From connecting Cross River Rail’s tunnels up to the rest of the network to carrying out critical station upgrades, this work just isn’t possible when trains are running,” Newton said.
“While the work was deliberately scheduled during the quieter school holiday period, we do appreciate some people had to change how they got around during that time.
“We thank everyone for their patience while this critical work was carried out.”
In the south of the network, Cross River Rail’s new tracks were connected to the existing rail line in preparation for southern portal testing, with approximately 110 workers installing 140 metres of track, which included 650 tonnes of ballast, 250 sleepers and eight tonnes of rail.
Station upgrades continued at Dutton Park and Yeerongpilly, as well as station works at Pimpama and Hope Island stations on the Gold Coast.
Further north, works included the removal and reinstatement of more than 700 metres of track, which allowed for 2,200 square metres of civil formation works between Bowen Hills and Albion to take place.
