The F-4 Phantom II was one of the most successful mid-Cold War American fighter jets and remains in limited service as it finds itself in its twilight years. It was developed as an all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber for the US Navy. But the F-4 Phantom II was not always the Phantom – before 1962 it was called the F4H-1 and the F-110A Spectre – but why did it change its name(s)?
