How Single-Engine Taxiing Works & When It’s Used

If a plane has two engines (or three, or perhaps even four), it seems logical that they all need to be operating before the plane taxis out for takeoff and remain running until arriving at the gate. This is the impression that most of the traveling public has. Indeed, there are plenty of times when all the engines are needed to taxi out for takeoff, but there are also many other instances when a single engine can be used.
