Auckland public transport fares to increase by 5.2% on average from February

Auckland Transport is proposing to increase public transport fares by 5.2% from February and reduce the number of fare zones from 14 to 9.

The proposal will be discussed at Auckland Council’s Transport, Resilience and Infrastructure Committee meeting on Thursday, where Auckland Transport will argue that the rise is needed to keep pace with operating costs.

The newly-introduced AT Hop weekly cap of $50 will remain unchanged, but a monthly pass for the Waiheke Island Ferry will go up by 13.2%, from $370 to $419.

The current CPI is 2.2% and Auckland Transport’s proposed rise follows increases of 6.5% and 6.2% for 2023 and 2024 respectively. There were no fare increases in 2021 and 2022, as part of Auckland Transport’s Covid response.
