India wants to open 23 new container rail terminals

India is planning to build 23 new container rail terminals along its north-south corridor. The new facilities will be solely open for container traffic, which means that bulk cargo will not be allowed to be handled there.
Out of the 23 containers, four will be in Tamil Nadu, five in Maharashtra, three in Rajasthan and two each in Delhi and Haryana. The remaining container terminals should be built in West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, Indian media platforms mentioned.

Container traffic has been growing in India over the past few months. For the 2023/24 period, 85.58 million tonnes of goods were moved in containers via rail in India, over six million tonnes that the previous period. Estimates for the 2024-25 period seem to point towards further growth, with the goal of reaching 91 million tonnes.
