The director of Melbourne’s mega Metro Tunnel project has defended the decision to only build the tunnel to run one model of train currently operating across the train network.
It was revealed in Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) hearings on Wednesday that five of the six train models in Melbourne won’t be able to drive the new Metro Tunnel, which will open in 2025.
Metro Tunnel Project Director Ben Ryan said the $13.4 billion project was built in line with other underground train tunnels globally.
“The project has been designed with international best practice,” he said on 3AW Drive.
