In a major milestone for heritage rail groups and tourism, Queensland Rail has completed restoration works at the Ballandean rail siding, paving the way for heritage train services to once again connect communities and attract visitors to the region.
This project reinstates a vital turnaround point for trains, allowing heritage groups like the Southern Downs Steam Railway (SDSR) to extend services between Toowoomba, Warwick and Stanthorpe all the way to Ballandean.
The Stanthorpe to Wallangarra line was closed late last year after severe fires ripped through the region and damaged infrastructure, and this marks a significant step in restoring heritage rail access and promoting tourism in the Granite Belt region.
Queensland Rail crews worked over several weeks to replace 135 sleepers and 68 turnout sleepers, as well as completing inspections and maintenance, ensuring the siding’s seamless functionality.
Queensland Rail’s Head of Regional Scott Cornish said Queensland Rail is all about connecting communities and this also shows its commitment to supporting heritage travel.
“We know how important this Stanthorpe to Wallangarra line is for the community and that’s why we have listened and carried out these works to enable services to run to Ballandean once again,” he said.
“Heritage rail holds a special place in our hearts, and Queensland Rail remains steadfast in our support for our volunteer-based heritage partners.”
This investment highlights Queensland Rail’s commitment to preserving rail history and supporting local communities and volunteer-run heritage railways.
The renewed regional access to Ballandean brings exciting opportunities for heritage travel enthusiasts.
Southern Downs Steam Railway’s ‘Downs Explorer’ Heritage Rail Experience Chairman Kelvin Hutchinson said the organisation is thrilled to see the reopening of the Ballandean siding.
“It unlocks endless possibilities for us to connect heritage rail enthusiasts with the heart of the Granite Belt once again,” he
said.
“Ballandean is renowned for its stunning wineries and natural beauty, and welcoming visitors back to this charming village and the Granite Belt region is an absolute delight. We are excited to announce that our first services to Ballandean from Stanthorpe and Warwick scheduled for February 2025.
“Families can look forward to a range of affordable nostalgic heritage rail experiences with tickets priced from just $20 for adults and $10 for children, ensuring an unforgettable experience for everyone.
From February 2025 Stanthorpe and regional adventurers can enjoy the picturesque rail journey from Stanthorpe to Ballandean, with the added convenience from July 2025 of a short 15-minute bus ride from Ballandean to Wallangarra for guided tours of the station and for meals on the platform, as well as exploration through the Girraween National Park.
