A transport expert says people are being too hard on the Myki system after Premier Jacinta Allan was grilled by Tony Jones on 3AW Mornings about the system.
Chief executive officer of Hale Infra Strategy. Dr Chris Hale told Shane McInnes, Melbourne’s system is only four or five years behind world-leading cities such as London and Singapore, while Sydney has invested hundreds of billions into their Opal system.
“It’s a discussion we could have that can’t be absent of the cost that these high-end, sophisticated systems,” he said.

I have no issues with MYKI and living regionally and travelling to and around the city, it works perfectly well for me. People criticising MYKI, such as those wannabe shockjocks of that execrable 3AW likaly drive their expensive SUV’s everywhere and never travel with the working class on PT.
Myki works really well for me both for V/Line and Metro services taking the train 3 days a week and sometimes on the weekend. The cost of rail services is too high for the metro system but very well priced for the V/Line system. Victoria does not need to spend $billions on a new Myki system only to find it will be a disaster.
V/Line need more trains I will say that, why only 3 cars on a weekend?
Myki works fine.
The Melbourne system is more than 5 years behind other major cities the trains need a major upgrade. More frequency and line extensions are urgently required. The metro 1 is needed and a metro 2 from Newport is needed. Suburban rail loop with housing is also a major investment.
Consideration should be given to a service loop under the bay connecting the Mornington peninsula with Geelong making it much easier to access Sorento and surrounds.
Connect the drysdsle line with port sea Sorento and into Frankston. Also connect with Dandenong line.
