More trains crossed the China-Kazakhstan border crossing in Khorgos in 2024

The border crossing in Khorgos, between China and Kazakhstan, saw 8,730 trains passing through during 2024. This is a 12.5 per cent increase compared to 2023. Moreover, processing time dropped from 12 to six to eight hours.
In more concrete terms, around 23 trains crossed the Khorgos border crossing every day last year. An increase was also observed in terms of volumes, with over 12 million tonnes being transported, 11 per cent more than the previous year.

One of the main reasons behind such an increase is that other border crossings, especially the one in Dostyk, experienced some disruptions. This led to more trains being diverted through Khorgos, especially container convoys coming from China. For example, container traffic via Dostyk was banned by the Kazakh government in September and October 2024.
