One of the biggest projects to boost rail freight at the Spanish port of Barcelona is the implementation of new access routes from the south. The parties involved in the projects have now settled on a ten-year-period to carry out the initiative, with the possibility of adding seven more years.
The project entails the construction of a new railway and road access to the port of Barcelona, for a total cost of almost 730 million euros. The Spanish ministry of transport will invest 263.8 million euros, infrastructure manager Adif will pitch in with 266.34 million euros, while the Barcelona Port Authority will cover the last 200 million. The new railway infrastructure will be developed to connect the Can Tunis terminal and the L’Hospitalet-Can Tunis section to the port.
Investments will be quite lower over the next couple of years and will significantly increase starting from 2027, according to a document published in the Spanish Official State Gazette. More specifically, a little over eight million euros will be deployed in 2025 and 2026. A larger sum, around 75 million euros, will be allocated in 2027. These investments will be covered by the ministry and Adif. The Barcelona Port Authority will start participating financially in the project from 2028, when it will invest 40 of the 121 million euros expected for that year.
