Why Is Kansas City International Airport’s Code Not “KCI”?

Kansas City International Airport (MCI), which is the principal facility serving the Kansas City metropolitan area shared by the states of Kansas and Missouri, is one of the most important hubs for travel in the Plains region. The facility, which sees millions of passengers pass through its doors each year, is not currently a hub for any major airline, but all large US carriers provide service to and from the city, connecting it with their extensive operational networks.
