The level crossing removal team (LXRP) are removing the level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads, improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.
LXRP are building rail bridges over Maddox Road and closing Champion Road at the rail line.
To keep locals moving, it is extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. This new road will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026. The team will also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.
Site investigations for the Newport level crossing removal project are starting back up this week as LXRP prepares for relocation of utilities, site establishment and construction this year.
In January, works include collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, a small excavator and non-destructive digging.
The team continue to deliver construction materials and equipment to the site offices in the area which will be in use until the project is complete.
As LXRP gets on with works residents may notice an increase in crews, construction vehicles and trucks, temporary safety fencing installed around the work areas, intermittent reduced speeds, lane closures and pedestrian detours.
Traffic management will be in place to help the delivery of materials and guide drivers and pedestrians safely through the area.
