With reports that Iran may soon receive its first new fighter jets since the 1979 Revolution (apart from when much of the Iraqi Air Force fled to Iran to escape US-led destruction only to be absorbed as reparations). Russia is supplying perhaps 24 Su-35S Flankers to Iran and it is expected that when they arrive, Iran will finally retire its F-14 Tomcats. The War Zone calls the Su-35S an “obvious replacement” for the Tomcats, noting it represents a “generational leap” over the old F-14.
