A Melbourne Airport spokesperson has described the current international arrivals terminal as “not fit for purpose” as delays continue to escalate.
Some passengers faced up to a two hour wait to collect their bags at Tullamarine on Thursday, with the airport blaming renovations and baggage handler shortages as reasons for the delay.
Melbourne Airport’s Andrew Lund conceded the experience was far from ideal, but said work was well underway to fix the problem moving forward.

“Our international arrivals area is very busy,” Mr Lund told 3AW Drive.
“To be frank, (the terminal is) not fit for purpose, and that’s why we’re working on a fairly major plan to expand the international terminal.”
