The problem is that we never built tracks for Amtrak. We just borrowed freight tracks from freight operators (under the agreement that freight trains get right-of-way). So Amtrak always had to fake it and has zero infrastructure of their own.
Actually, the postal service and Amtrak are each other’s savior. The two things that run on a schedule? People and mail. Putting them together makes too much sense. And combined, it would improve the competitiveness of both.
