Privitisation could also hurt huge multi billion dollar projects like the New Hudson River Tunnel/Gateway program to increase capacity on the busy Northeast Corridor.

The problem is that we never built tracks for Amtrak. We just borrowed freight tracks from freight operators (under the agreement that freight trains get right-of-way). So Amtrak always had to fake it and has zero infrastructure of their own.
Actually, the postal service and Amtrak are each other’s savior. The two things that run on a schedule? People and mail. Putting them together makes too much sense. And combined, it would improve the competitiveness of both.
