The new transport Government Policy Statement ‒ the document that states the direction of transport policy for the relevant agencies ‒ was both straightforward and unexpected.
On the straightforward side was the Government’s commitment to reinstating “roads of national significance” ‒ which are basically the priority to be built. On the less straightforward side, car rego prices will be unexpectedly jacked up by $50 over two years.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has also been directed to consider all manner of funding options in order to get new roads built ‒ including both public-private partnerships and value capture along roading corridors.
