GDL to stage 24-hour strike starting tonight

The German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) is staging its sixth round of strikes in the context of its dispute with Deutsche Bahn (DB). For the freight industry, the action will start today, Monday 11 March at 6 pm and will end tomorrow, Tuesday 12 March at 6 pm.
For non-freight-related operations, the strike will start on Tuesday 12 March at 2 am and will end on Wednesday 13 March at 2 am. The union justified this initiative by saying that DB missed the deadline gave by the union to submit a written offer by yesterday, Sunday 10 March at 6 pm. “The strike will once again have a massive impact on all German rail operations”, DB said, highlighting once again the lack of a 48-hour notice.

More upcoming strikes in Germany were announced by GDL’s boss Claus Weselsky at the end of last week. At the beginning of March, in fact, negotiations between the union and DB for a new collective bargaining agreement went south. This led to a 35-hour strike called by GDL between 6 and 8 March. In other words, this will be their second strike in less than seven days, and the sixth in total since the beginning of negotiations. DB even tried to take legal action against GDL in January, but had no success.
