The Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB) has launched a Sustainable Insights Reporting Tool to streamline and improve the collection and reporting of sustainability data within the rail industry.
The tool is designed to collect comprehensive sustainability data from the rail industry, aligned to topics outlined in the Sustainable Rail Blueprint. It also allows operators with rail passenger contracts to submit data to the Department for Transport (DfT), and The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) can view and export data relevant to annual data collection.
The tool offers a unified method for sustainability reporting, enabling collaboration across organisations to generate actionable insights that benefit the industry and support sustainable development.
The free tool will allow organisations to:
- Align and improve industry sustainability data collection and reporting.
- Provides the industry with the means to work collaboratively for future data review and analysis.
RSSB is developing a Data Hub in 2025-26, the next component in our Sustainable Insights toolkit.
The Data Hub will provide customisable data visualisation and analysis using information submitted through the reporting tool and other identified sources. This will help individual organisation monitor and report their sustainability data and inform sustainability strategies based on industry trends.
Thom Rawson, RSSB Sustainable Rail Principle said: “The Reporting Tool, developed with input from the rail industry, replaces and improves on the existing Sustainability Tool. It is designed to meet usability, functionality, and collaborative needs.
“This reporting tool marks the initial step in the broader Sustainable Insights toolkit, which aims to provide the rail sector with actionable insights to inform sustainability strategies, decisions and actions.”
