PKP CARGO Group is expanding its operations in the automotive logistics sector, increasing cross-border rail transport from Slovakian car plants to the Slovenian port of Koper. PKP CARGO International is spearheading these operations.
The key to this new service is speed and efficiency. Thanks to the use of multi-system locomotives, the 650-kilometre route can be covered in just one day. These locomotives operate seamlessly across Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia, eliminating time-consuming locomotive changes at borders. Operational efficiency is enhanced because only driver changes are necessary, a requirement due to gaps in national certifications and language.
“The steep increase in the volume of these transports confirms our strong position in the region of Central Europe and our ability to handle complex, international logistics chains,” says Agnieszka Wasilewska-Semail, CEO of PKP CARGO S.A. in restructuring. “Cooperation with large logistics companies and vehicle manufacturers is a sign of trust for us and an incentive for further development in this demanding segment. Thanks to such activities, the Group is implementing a strategy of changing the structure of transported goods,” she adds.
Long-term contracts
This rail service handles a mix of finished vehicles, components, and spare parts and serves eight different car brands. Trains, stretching over 500 meters, can transport between 90 and 200 cars, depending on the specific configuration and vehicle types.
PKP CARGO International has secured long-term contracts, some extending up to three years, with international logistics service providers. The company is responding to increased automotive shipment volumes by adjusting its operational setup, including service planning and fleet allocation.
“Our priority is to ensure reliable and timely deliveries, which are crucial for the stable functioning of the automotive industry,” says Łukasz Grzesło, CEO of PKP CARGO International. “Thanks to route optimisation, modern rolling stock and close cooperation with our partners, we can meet the high standards and demanding expectations of our customers.”
