In the summer of 2019, the Boeing 747-400 had an average of 32 daily scheduled passenger flights from the US. British Airways, El Al, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, and Virgin Atlantic operated 28 routes. Then the pandemic happened, quickening the retirement of the aging and far less fuel-efficient variant than simple technological evolution.
