February works deliver new car parks and track

February works on the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication delivered a number of milestones, including a new car park and the first sections of duplicated track.

The first stage of the new car park at Marshall Station is now open, with passengers set to benefit from an increase in parking spaces as part of upgrades at the station.

During February works, the first section of more than eight kilometres of duplicated track was installed between Surf Coast Highway and Waurn Ponds.

More than 1km of track, 4,720 tonnes of ballast and 1,680 sleepers were laid, with the duplicated track to help enable more reliable and frequent services between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds.

Work also progressed on construction of the new stations at South Geelong and Marshall, with the steel structures for the ramps and stairs that will link to the pedestrian overpasses taking shape.

The foundations for the second platform were established at Marshall, with the first panels for the platform structure also installed.

The expansion of the car park along Drews Road includes 156 new sealed car parking spaces, with more to be available later this year.

A new entrance point along Drews Road is also open, allowing work to start on the next stage of the car park upgrade and providing parking passengers while works continue.

More than 200 cubic metres of asphalt was laid in this section, along with the installation of nine light poles and three CCTV cameras to provide safe and accessible parking for passengers.

Overall, more than 200 new spaces will be built at Marshall Station for the growing communities in area, providing better station access when more services on the Geelong Line are delivered after the project’s completion.

At Fyans Street in South Geelong, drainage was constructed under the alignment for the new road that will go under the rail bridge as part of work to remove the level crossing.

Work also progressed at Surf Coast Highway during a three-week closure in February, with the road reopening a week early following drainage and asphalting works.
