Peel Ports development boosts UK and Irish civil engineering

The UK’s second-largest port operator, Peel Ports Group, has appointed a host of contractors to its new construction framework. The list of projects covers a major programme of construction works across its UK and Ireland sites, worth up to GB£750m.

The regional and national suppliers appointed by Peel Ports will support projects across the group’s entire portfolio of UK and Ireland ports. Already flagged to benefit from the programme, the operators have listed its UK holdings at the Port of Liverpool, Heysham Port, Manchester Ship Canal, London Medway, its Clydeport sites, Great Yarmouth, and Dublin Port in Ireland.

The programme comes as a welcome boost for UK and Irish engineering and construction companies. Peel Ports has named 18 contractors across a multi-lot framework, supporting a wide-ranging development programme. The contact lots run for periods of up to eight years. Works required cover general construction, marine construction and a national lot for major projects.

Among the appointees, Belfast founded McLaughlin and Harvey recently built the deep water terminal at Stornoway, Scotland, for the harbour board there (main picture). They are also engaged with DP World on the rather more substantial enlargement of London Gateway. “This rigorous procurement process has allowed us to select the very best regional and national partners, who will support the ongoing development of our network of logistics hubs,” said Lewis McIntyre, Managing Director – Port Services at Peel Ports Group. “We look forward to working closely with the 18 contractors who have been selected to carry out various projects in the months and years ahead, all of which are the result of substantial investment in the future of our operations.”

The General Construction scope includes the construction and maintenance of roads, earthworks and ground remediation, and the construction, maintenance and refurbishment of new and existing warehouses. There are also rail construction, bridge construction and demolition elements.

The Marine Construction scope covers specialist marine construction works, including piling; asset renewal and refurbishment; berthing furniture and bollards; quay walls; lock and sluice gate maintenance and replacement; and RoRo facilities provision.
