The Bombardier CRJ550, a modified variant of the larger CRJ700 model, was specifically designed to cater to regional airlines in the United States by complying with the scope clause. The aircraft limited the number of seats on the jet to 50, offering a lower maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 65,000 pounds. This significantly reduced the 75,000 offered by the larger CRJ700 model. Bombardier introduced this specific variant to cater to a market that demanded this kind of 50-seat aircraft, which offered more legroom and thus a premium experience for passengers.
