TURKISH State Railways (TCDD) signed a contract with domestic manufacturer Türasaş to supply 95 electric locomotives on March 15.
No delivery date was quoted and the price of the deal for the TSI-compliant E5000 locomotives was not revealed.
A prototype E5000 was unveiled in February 2023. The new design has a maximum speed of 140km/h and is rated at 5MW.
“Our Eskişehir 5000 project, which [is one of] firsts and bests in this field, has many prominent features,” says Mr Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Turkey’s minister of transport and infrastructure.
“The first domestically-designed vehicle body, the first bogie and the first train control and management system for mainline locomotives were implemented with this project,” Uraloğlu says.
At the contract signing ceremony Uraloğlu also revealed that two prototype New Sakarya 160km/h EMUs are complete, with delivery of a fleet of 56 scheduled for 2030. And that the prototype of Turkey’s first domestically-built high-speed train is expected to be completed later this year.
