In November 1970, British Caledonian Airways (BCal) was formed. Its creation was a manifestation of the British Government's concerns over the monopoly that state-owned national airlines British European Airways (BEA) and British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) held over air transportation. In contrast to its competitors, British Caledonian was privately owned, eventually growing to become a serious threat to the other two airlines that would later merge to form British Airways in 1974.
