AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract for an additional 19 Railjet inter-city trains. Delivery of the latest order will start in autumn 2028.
Siemens is currently supplying eight new-generation trains, the first of which entered service on the Vienna – Salzburg – Innsbruck – Feldkirch route on March 22.
Each 230km/h Railjet is formed with a push-pull electric locomotive and nine coaches, comprising two business-class coaches, a restaurant car, four economy-class coaches, a multifunction economy-class vehicle, and an economy-class driving trailer. There are six bicycle spaces and three wheelchair spaces per train.
The nine coaches are 240m long and can seat 532 passengers in a mixture of compartments and open-plan accommodation. The windows have been optimised to improve mobile phone reception by 50% compared with the first-generation trains. The patented windows have a special laser-beamed structure developed by Siemens.
The trains have lightweight bogies, which Siemens says are 30% lighter than previous designs and use fewer components during manufacture. There is an innovative power distribution system, with a redundant power supply from the adjacent coach. A self-diagnosis system continuously transmits data via a secure radio link to the maintenance depot.
Siemens says the train’s energy efficiency has been improved through the installation of LED interior lighting, an air-conditioning system which uses a heat pump for both cooling and heating, and fresh air ventilation regulated according to the CO2 level of the interior air.
